A little bit of jazz mixed with some contemporary sounds, played by professional and amateur musicians raised some significant greenbacks for Stockton school music programs Sunday.
The second annual Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Benefit Concert at Faye Spanos Concert Hall at University of the Pacific is expected to have raised $2,500 to benefit Stockton Unified School District music programs, organizer Jay Maddox said.
"It's our second year doing this. It's a mix of professionals in the first half of the show, but also an alumni ensemble will perform in the second half," Maddox said before the show as the Dave Brubek Institute Jazz Quintette rehearsed.
Guests were charged $10 for an adult ticket to the concert. That the charge is to benefit Stockton schools was pleasing to many who attended.
"We are grateful for the music programs offered in schools and would love to see them expanded," said Leslee Abram of Turlock, attending the concert to see her son, Pacific student Michael Abram, perform. "Our children have all loved music and taken advantage of their school programs all the way up to college."
In addition to a cash donation, Phi Mu Alpha also is donating 75 musical instruments to Stockton schools that can be loaned out to those who need them.
