Troy University's Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity will present its Spring A Capella Concert at 2:45 p.m. today at Sorrell Chapel. The public is invited.
The concert will feature a 15-voice, all-male choir and will focus on the American spiritual.
Fraternity member Scott Sexton said the music fraternity is required to present a concert each semester, and one of those concerts must focus on American composers.
"This year we chose African-American composers and the American spirituals," he said. "The composers whose music we chose are Moses Hogan and William Appling. We chose them for their contributions to the American spiritual and for its historical significance."
The selections the a capella choir will sing include such popular spirituals as "Go Down Moses," "Witness," "Rock-a My Soul" and "We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace."
The 45-minute concert will also feature several brotherhood songs, including a song that was written by a brother of the national music fraternity.
There is no charge for the concert, but Sexton said donations will be accepted for the fraternity's philanthropy, which is to advance the cause of music in America.
"Our fraternity is raising funds to purchase guitars for Troy Elementary School," Sexton said. "The guitar is an instrument that has long been a part of American folk music. Folk music is being lost, so it is important for elementary students to learn about folk music and how to appreciate it."
The brothers of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity are invited as part of fraternity rush each semester. Each has an appreciation for music and many of them are musicians and or singers.
