The Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) is the largest all-male a cappella organization in the world. Founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1938, the Society strives to perpetuate and celebrate harmony sung in the barbershop style while bringing together men of all ages in fellowship and friendship and enriching lives through the joy of singing. As such, their goals and ideals reflect those of Phi Mu Alpha. Barbershop singing is a uniquely American art form, and many Sinfonians are already involved with BHS chapters and competitions. And we’re thrilled to announce a strategic alliance with BHS to bring our two organizations closer together.
Most recently, Sinfonia featured a barbershop breakout session at last summer’s Convention, where longtime member of BHS, Brother Manny Lopez, Gamma Phi '05, led dozens of brothers in song. We were excited to offer this experience to brothers, bringing together Sinfonians from across the country to collaborate together in music.
More generally, BHS offers numerous opportunities for our brothers to enhance their musical experiences. For brothers looking for new music for their choral group, both in college and beyond, the BHS website offers resources and music to find what you need. Find the perfect piece for your high school or middle school choir, or add some variety to an American Music Recital or Mills Music Mission.
BHS also has numerous regional chapters, many that are close to our chapters and alumni associations. Interested brothers are encouraged to seek out local chapters and become involved with other singers. As an offshoot of this, BHS holds various competitions for groups of various sizes and ages. It is a great opportunity for brothers to band together, make some music, and compete against some of the best barbershop groups in the country.
