NOMINATIONS AND LEGISLATION DUE NOVEMBER 1
As announced last month in The Red & Black, November 1 is the deadline for two very important elements of the upcoming National Convention:
- Nominations for four national officer positions
- Proposals for legislation
Information on both topics is posted below. Please heed this call and submit your nominations and proposed legislation before the November 1 deadline!
NOMINATIONS FOR NATIONAL OFFICER POSITIONS
In the September preceding each National Convention, the Fraternity solicits letters from the membership-at-large naming possible nominees for the offices of National President, National Vice President, Committeeman-at-Large, and National Collegiate Representative.
The nominations process allows the Nominating Committee (see “Nominating Committee Appointed” below) to consider the opinions of a wide range of brothers regarding who should lead the Fraternity during the coming triennium. Once the Nominating Committee selects the official slate of nominees, other brothers interested in these positions may be nominated from the floor of the Assembly by any delegate (National Executive Committeeman, Province Governor, or Collegiate Province Representative).
The Nominating Committee will meet in early November to determine the official slate of nominees. Nominees names and biographies will appear in Spring 2006 in both The Red & Black and The Sinfonian.
The three positions on the National Executive Committee that are not nominated through this process are the other Committeeman-at-Large, who will have served only three years of his six-year term; the Chairman of the Province Governors’ Council, who is elected directly by the Province Governors’ Council during the National Convention; and the Chairman of the CPRs’ Council, who is elected directly by the CPRs’ Council during the National Convention.
Eligibility requirements
Article IV, Section Two of the National Constitution defines the eligibility requirements for these four offices as follows:
- National President: Must meet at least one of the following requirements: 1) served at least three years as a member of the National Executive Committee, 2) served at least seven years as a Province Governor, or 3) been a Sinfonian in good standing for at least fifteen years. The National President may succeed himself for a total of no more than two consecutive three-year terms.
- National Vice President: Must be a Sinfonian in good standing who has been a Sinfonian for three or more years. The National Vice President may succeed himself for a total of no more than two consecutive three-year terms.
- Committeeman-at-Large (6-year term): Must be a Sinfonian in good standing who has been a Sinfonian for three or more years. The Committeeman-at-Large may succeed himself in perpetuity. (Note: There are two Committeemen-at-Large on the National Executive Committee, serving overlapping terms, so that only one of the two positions is open for election at any one Assembly.)
- National Collegiate Representative: Must be a collegiate member who is in good standing at the time of his election and who is serving or has served as an elected officer in his chapter. The National Collegiate Representative may not succeed himself.
How do I submit a nomination?
Is there someone you would like to nominate for one of the positions listed above? Here’s what to do:
Deadline: November 1, 2005
Format: Typewritten, formal letter
Addressee: National Nominating Committee
What to include: The nominee’s name, address, telephone number, email address, and a description of his qualifications.
Where to send it:
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity
National Headquarters
Attn: Nominating Committee
10600 Old State Road
Evansville, IN 47711-1399
NOTE: Email nominations will not be accepted!
In accordance with Article XXV, Section One of the National Constitution, the Fraternity hereby requests all planned proposals for amendments to the governing documents be submitted to the Legislative Committee no later than November 1.
Please send any proposed legislation by November 1 via mail or email to the National Headquarters:
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity
National Headquarters
Attn: Legislative Committee
10600 Old State Road
Evansville, IN 47711-1399
By directing legislative proposals to the National Headquarters, the National Staff can ensure that all members of the Legislative Committee receive them in time for consideration. The Legislative Committee will make recommendations regarding proposed legislation to the National Executive Committee at the NEC’s winter meeting. The NEC will then decide on the official legislative docket, and this list of legislative proposals will be publicized to the delegates and chapters throughout the spring.
Legislative proposals not included on the official legislative docket may be introduced by delegates from the Assembly floor. However, there is no guarantee that the Assembly will have enough time to consider them while in session, so please make every attempt to submit your proposals by November 1 for consideration for the official docket.
