Renowned composer Frank Ticheli will be initiated as a National Honorary member on Saturday, July 18, 2009, during this summer’s 2009 National Convention. In addition, Ticheli will guest conduct one of his compositions with Sinfonia Winds, the convention wind ensemble, during its performance that afternoon.
Ticheli is an award-winning and well-regarded composer, known largely for his prolific repertoire for wind ensemble. He has also composed critically acclaimed works for orchestra and chorus. In 2006, Ticheli received the National Band Association/William D. Revelli Memorial Band Composition Contest for his Symphony No. 2.
Ticheli is an active clinician nationally, and he teaches composition at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. His publisher, Manhattan Beach Music, has established a composition contest in his name, which is now in its second year and is awarding $6,500 in prizes. Additionally, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Ticheli’s “Sun Dance” for concert band was made available for bands across the country to perform for free, with the condition that proceeds from the concerts would be donated to victims of this tragedy.
It will be a truly great honor to welcome Frank Ticheli into Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia as a national honorary member.
