In Memoriam – Dr. T. Jervis Underwood

March 10, 1932 – April 26, 2017

Brother T. Jervis Underwood (Gamma Theta 1954), National President of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity from 1988-91, passed away April 26, 2017 in Denton, Texas, at Good Samaritan, Denton Village, after a lengthy illness. Dr. Underwood was 85 years old.

Brother Underwood’s tenure in Sinfonia was characterized by an abiding faith in the values of our Order, and steadfast leadership in turbulent and challenging times. Serving as National Historian from 1991-2000, Dr. Underwood authored the first comprehensive research history of the Fraternity, published in 2000.

Jervis Underwood was the epitome of “the manly musician and musicianly man,” and received the Robert J. Rogers Lifetime Service Award on July 18, 2009 at the 53rd National Convention in Orlando, Florida. Brother Underwood is one of only six men to receive the Fraternity’s highest honor, the Ossian Everett Mills Award, which he was presented at the 49th National Convention in Cincinnati in 1997.

Services are scheduled for Sunday, May 7, 2017 at DeBerry Funeral Home in Denton, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Phi Mu Alpha or to a charity of one’s choice.
