SEPT. 21-25, 2015

Today is the first day of National Hazing Prevention Week, and we encourage all brother Sinfonians to stand firmly in opposition to hazing in all its forms and manifestations.  Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia was one of the earliest sponsors of this event, and the Fraternity remains committed to its support of the eradication of hazing everywhere.

Our annual observance is marked by the call to “Live your Oath.”  Believing that no man who truly understands our Oath of Obligation can find it consistent with hazing in any sense, we call on all brothers to focus on “living the Oath” with renewed energy daily.

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia has taken a strong and proactive stance against hazing since the early 1970’s, and introduced the first formal policies on Hazing and Alcohol Abuse in 1984.  We urge our chapters, colonies, alumni associations and each individual brother to take part in campus and local anti-hazing activities, and join in the observance of National Hazing Prevention Week all week.

Look for additional posts and social media activities throughout the week as we observe this important event.  Most importantly, if you observe anyone engaged in hazing activities, whether in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, or in other organizations, SPEAK OUT!  Studies have shown that those engaged in hazing tend to stop the activity if even one person questions what they are doing. This is commonly known as “the bystander effect.”

So let it be for Sinfonia!
